Frequently asked questions

Plain answers before you email.

Ruck Mode is both an Apple Watch ruck app and a new challenge operating layer for groups. This page answers the normal questions: what it does, how challenges work, what data is used, what is not official, and who to contact.

The basics

What Ruck Mode is.

What is Ruck Mode?

Ruck Mode is an Apple Watch-native training app for loaded miles: rucking, weighted walks, pack hikes, vest training, Murph prep, and trail sessions where carrying weight changes the effort.

What problem does it solve?

Generic fitness apps record that you moved. Ruck Mode asks what you carried, shows loaded pace, tracks repeat loaded-mile efforts, and gives a post-session debrief so the work is easier to understand.

Is this just another running app?

No. Running apps are usually built around distance and pace. Ruck Mode is built around load, readiness, field use, and challenge/community proof for people training under weight.

Does it replace Garmin?

No one has to throw away a Garmin. The point is simpler: if you already wear Apple Watch, Ruck Mode gives you a load-aware rucking layer without buying into a second watch ecosystem.

Does it replace Strava, WHOOP, Athlytic, or Cora?

No. Strava is useful for sharing routes. WHOOP, Athlytic, and Cora are recovery or coaching layers. Ruck Mode is focused on the ruck itself: pack weight, loaded pace, Loaded Mile Score, readiness context, and post-ruck debriefs on Apple Watch.

Do I need Apple Watch Ultra?

No. Ultra is a great fit for outdoor battery, durability, and field use, but the core Ruck Mode flow is built for supported Apple Watch hardware.

What should I do first?

Do one safe loaded mile. Pick a light load if you are new, start the ruck on Apple Watch, finish the session, and look at the receipt: load-distance, loaded pace, Loaded Mile Score, readiness context, and debrief.

Is this too hardcore for weighted walks?

No. Weighted walks count. Ruck Mode is credible enough for serious ruckers, but the first-mile flow is also meant for beginners who want a low-impact way to make walking feel like real training.

What Apple Health permissions are needed?

Ruck Mode uses Apple Watch and Health permissions only for the workout features you enable, such as heart rate, route/workout context, and activity data needed to record or review rucks. If a health permission is denied, some metrics may be limited until you turn it back on in iOS settings.

Is there TestFlight access?

Public users should download from the App Store. TestFlight may be used for limited beta review, screenshot proof, or controlled feature testing when the team opens a specific build.

Challenge OS

How challenges work.

What is the Challenge Community OS?

It is the layer on top of the app that helps someone run a movement: challenge pages, participant tracking, referrals, reminders, leaderboard summaries, sponsor proof, and recap content.

Can my gym, club, school, or veteran group run one?

Yes. The first version is intentionally simple: we can help set up a public challenge page, rules, join CTA, reminder copy, and a recap format. You bring the group and the mission.

What is “challenge in a box”?

A prebuilt challenge package: rules, page, invite copy, reminder cadence, leaderboard idea, sponsor slot, and recap template. Examples include 30-Day Loaded Mile, Murph Prep, Veterans Day Ruck, Gym Ruck Club, and Team Fundraiser.

Do participants have to pay?

The goal is to let people join and start with the free app path. Pro features can add deeper history, comparisons, debriefs, and advanced tracking. Apple controls final purchase and subscription terms in the App Store.

Can sponsors be included?

Yes. A sponsor can support a challenge page, prize, local event, or recap. Ruck Mode can track basic aggregate proof like joined, completed, clicked, referred, and total logged challenge activity.

Is this an affiliate program too?

It can be. The challenge link is the first proof layer. Affiliate or sponsor economics should come after clean attribution, disclosure, and Apple report reconciliation are ready.

Workflow

What happens when an organizer says yes?

1. Pick the mission

Choose the challenge type, audience, dates, rules, sponsor angle, and whether it is public or private.

2. Build the page

Ruck Mode creates a page with rules, App Store CTA, join instructions, share copy, and organizer/sponsor context.

3. Invite people

The organizer shares the link by email, social, gym board, podcast, group chat, or local partner channels.

4. Track progress

The admin view tracks joins, download intent, completions, referrals, and notes. Native app integration deepens this over time.

5. Generate the push

Ruck Mode produces reminder posts, leaderboard summaries, and weekly recaps so the organizer is not staring at a blank page.

6. Prove the result

At the end, the group gets a simple recap: who joined, what got completed, what worked, and what to run next.

Privacy, billing, safety

The careful answers.

Is Ruck Mode a medical device?

No. Ruck Mode is not a medical device and does not diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent disease. Readiness and training guidance are fitness estimates.

Is this official military, GORUCK, Garmin, CrossFit, or Apple training?

No. Ruck Mode is independent. It should not be described as official, endorsed, partnered, or affiliated with those organizations unless a real written partnership exists.

Is the tactical training official scoring?

No. Tactical and military-style workouts are fitness templates only. They are not official military scoring, official test administration, official Murph event operation, medical advice, or selection preparation.

Does AI Debrief send my full GPS route?

No. AI Debrief is optional and uses summary workout stats. Full GPS tracks and raw HealthKit records are not sent for AI Debrief.

How do subscriptions work?

Public subscription purchases run through Apple’s in-app purchase flow. Apple confirms final pricing, trial availability, renewal, cancellation, and purchase status at checkout.

Can I cancel?

Yes. Apple subscriptions are managed through your Apple ID subscription settings.

Can Ruck Mode call emergency services?

No. Ruck Mode is not a rescue service or emergency dispatch service. Use Apple Emergency SOS or local emergency services first in an emergency.

Will this kill my Apple Watch battery?

Ruck Mode uses normal Apple Watch workout behavior and is designed around glanceable field stats. Battery life still depends on watch model, age, screen settings, GPS use, cellular use, temperature, and session length. Start charged for long efforts.

Do you sell workout, route, or health data?

No. Ruck Mode does not sell health, route, or training data to advertisers, employers, insurers, or data brokers. Optional debrief features use summary workout stats, and raw HealthKit records are not sold.
